LEISURELY JAUNT TO KIRIBATI, MICRONESIA

So I went to Kiribati, Micronesia this weekend instead of river rafting because it got cancelled last minute on Friday because of a typhoon threat.  The typhoon never came to existence but I still had a kickass time in Kiribati. This post was originally much longer but while inserting a photo gallery all the text of the post got deleted.

BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I am overwhelmed.

GO KARTING + BELGIAN BEER = SHEER RESPLENDENT ECSTASY

Hello lovelies!

Last night we all went go karting once again in Gongbei!  The experience was equally exhilarating as last time although I find myself lamenting the lack of propositions to engage in halotry – perhaps I looked considerably less desperate this time around.  Who knows.

Let’s do this chronologically, though.

Before go karting, we, i.e. myself, Jamie, Leo, Nicolas, James and Andy(Andrea) met up at Alain’s Belgium Beer Bar (A’S BBB) to enjoy a few bottles of scrumptious Belgian beer along with some over-due dosage of western gastronomy.  I had the most deliciously sweet beer ever.  I would compare it to … nothing.  Perhaps it is better described as what Willy Wonka would brew in his factory.  I can just image the fat German kid aka Augustus Gloop downing the illustrious Belgian brew from the quaint waters (beer?) of the alcoholic paradise candy river.  Yes, it was that good.

Most of us had a delightful pizza which was surprisingly lusciously toothsome.  Although a no-contender compared to a real, fresh Italian pizza, the pizza at Alain’s was, nevertheless, legit.

When it came to paying the bill, however, the tides changed.  Our favourite advertising/media firm Delta Bridges had a profile of Alain’s on their website and had a large image proclaiming that there was 30% off all alcohol from 17.30 to 20.30 EVERY NIGHT!  The discount, however, was seemingly nonexistent!  We pushed for it but the manager claimed that it was only valid for one type of beer.  NB: the ad said ALL alcohol.  After we pushed some more, the cheque went down again but for an apparently random amount.

Brief review of Alain’s: delicious food, illustrious beer and lacklustre management.

GOKARTING, as previously stated, was wonderful.  It was Leo’s FIRST TIME EVER driving any type of vehicle and I must say that he managed quite well.  After the first round, Jamie was 1st and I was 2nd.  The second round, however, was a bit bizarre.  During the first round I had noticed that they were wielding the frames of some gokarts together and I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of driving one of these polished turds for my second round.  What a disaster.  The car kept spinning out and was just plain crazy.  Moreover, on my last lap, my brakes stopped working and I smashed into a barrier at the first bend.  Wonderful.

Damn you, polished jalopy turd.

A typhoon is coming to Zhuhai.  JOY!

Write to you all on Monday

Dong’ao Island – 东澳岛

Hello my lovelies!

Excuse my tardiness with this blog post, I know that you all probably spent all of yesterday frantically clicking ‘refresh’ on blog.com waiting for the site to come back up, only to no avail.

‘Twas undoubtedly an interesting weekend. After work on Friday, I played a game of pool with Jamie and Leo followed by some serious BBQ action in the far north of Zhuhai.

Oh wait.

There wasn’t any BBQ because Jamie led us to a place that supposedly had a massive BBQ but upon arrival it was nowhere to be found.  Upon asking the in-the-know locals, it was determined that the BBQ was there everyday except for that Friday because of “management”.  Very peculiar.  We settled for an outdoor restaurant with many fellow 珠海人 (Zhuhai-ers) dining at its tables. Headed off to an Irish bar in the Ningxi area of Zhuhai and then called it a night.

On Saturday we (myself, Jamie and Helen [Jamie's FIANCÉE]) met up with some people in the CouchSurfing community and went to Dong’ao Island – about an hour ferry ride from Zhuhai Xiang Zhou ferry port.  The ferry port was crazy – the citizens of Zhuhai are clearly huge fans of weekend getaways to Zhuhai’s 140+ islands!!  We finally arrived and met up with everyone and got to an amazing secluded beach and swam, relaxed and played some frisbee.  When diving for a frisbee and fighting over possession with fellow intern Frank, my right hand fingers sustained some damage and were pretty gross.  Soon enough they were dripping an appetising yellow goo!  Miamiamiamiam

After sunset, we all had a nice BBQ on the beach along with some brandy and beer and spent the rest of the night on the beach.  We did spot a few UFO’s in the distance but fearlessly drank the night away!

Sunday we woke up early (sleeping in tents in Southern China is more akin to sleeping in an oven…) and headed back to Zhuhai and I headed over to the resplendent Sun Yat-sen University Hospital and got my wounds cleaned and bandaged and now they’re already healing quite nicely!

That’s about it for this past weekend’s escapes – forgive me for the lack of photos but my computer is not being cooperative at the moment so you’ll have to enjoy this generic picture of Dong’ao pulled from Google images!!

I cannot believe that my last day of work is a week from today and I am leaving China in 8 days to head off to Macau and Hong Kong!!!

Don’t worry, though, I am going white water river rafting this upcoming weekend so there will be one more good blog post come next Monday! ;)

CHENGDU – 成都

Ciao i miei tesorini!

So this weekend, despite the fact that I did not go to Bangkok, I managed to have a ball in Chengdu!

Getting there was a bit rough, my flight was supposed to leave Guangzhou at 20.30 on Friday so I left work a bit early but by the time I had gone through security and waited a bit, the status of the flight was changed to delayed. Jamie had forewarned me about domestic Chinese flights being infamous for delays so I couldn’t say that I was too surprised. A delay of about 5 hours, however, was not expected. The mixture of frustration along with the propensity to complain by Chinese people was something to see – the poor airline employee was surrounded by an angry mob of flyers yelling at him. Don’t kill the messenger, guys! But never fear! McDonalds and bottled water quickly arrived and placated most of the crowd, although a few of the angrier ones went over to the Air China counter and demanded that we fly out on time, only to no avail. For me, it was a good 5 hours actually, I made the acquaintance of three Hong Kongers who were going to Tibet via Chengdu and we changed contact info and I plan to meet up with them in August when I am in HK!

I arrived in Chengdu and got to my hostel at about 5.00, much later than I was expecting! I slept for about 4 hours and then woke up and headed over to the “People’s Garden” which is a massive park in Chengdu with many tea houses where you can just sip on some longjing tea and read/chat/play mah-jong for hours. I opted for reading and thoroughly enjoyed Italo Calvino’s Eremita a Parigi.

The rest of the first day I wandered quite a bit – saw some nice temples, a science museum, the main shopping area/pedestrian street where I people-watched for quite a bit but actually found that people were often so interested in me that they’d ask for some photos and make small talk, often limited by a combination of my bad Putonghua and their limited command of English.

A note about the food: AMAZING. SPICES AND PEPPERS GALORE. I can truly only hope to hire my own personal chef from Sichuan when I am older ;)

Saturday night was a bit crazy and I met up with some people in the Couch Surfing community – thanks for the suggestion, Jamie! Went to a chill Jamaican-esque bar called “Hemp House” and played the illustrious dice-game and then went to the most ridiculous club I have ever been in my life! The only option was table service with either brandy or cognac – luckily one of my new acquaintances knew people and we didn’t have to pay! ;) – The night went into morning and I didn’t get to sleep until 5.30, which normally isn’t a problem, but I had to wake up at 7 to go see the famous PANDAS. I managed and although I was suffering – the visit to the panda centre was well worth it. The pandas are so lively and playful – even watching them munch on bamboo is interesting!!

The rest of Sunday is a mix of eating, napping, wandering and reading.

Had to wake up at 5 this morning to catch my flight back to Guangzhou and then a bus back to Zhuhai and here I am.

I ADORED Chengdu and plan to go back there ASAP – the dichotomy of the “most relaxed city” in China along with the energy of the people leads to such a chill yet happening place.

This upcoming weekend, white water river rafting with my host mother and her colleagues is on the agenda so expect another good blog post then!!

Enjoy the photos for now!

广东日之泉足球俱乐部 – GUANGZHOU FOOTY GAME WITH LIVERPOOL FC

你们好 mes tendres chouchous!

Alors…

Last night Jamie (the big bad boss of the Zhuhai office) and I made pilgrimage to Guangzhou, the capital of the Guangdong province, about 2 hours north of Zhuhai to see Liverpool FC’s start to their 2011 Asian tour. While I am not a big fan of footy, I am a huge fan of random experiences and this fit the bill perfectly. We took the new, high-speed rail from Zhuhai north to Guangzhou south and then took the also new metro system right to the stadium. While we had originally been expecting that the turnout would be low, there were thousands of fans around the stadium, eagerly queuing up to enter. Surprisingly enough, the Liverpool fans (I am assuming that if they were sporting a Liverpool jersey, they were a “fan”) outnumbered the Sunray Cave FC (the Guangdong FC – 广东日之泉足球俱乐部) at least two to one.

Upon entering the stadium, the police confiscated my war drum (see photo of the big empty water jug). I was heartbroken and crestfallen – but still managed to make quite a bit of noise despite being deprived of my war drum!

It was an exciting match, with Liverpool winning 4-3 over Sunray Cave FC. SCFC did manage to get in two goals in the last few minutes of the game, at the dismay of the Liverpool fans.

After failing to get a taxi (Guangzhou is notorious for its lack of supply of cabs!), we got a bit lost in an odyssey of aimlessly wandering on foot along with some (very) unhelpful metro directions. Despite our hardships, we finally made it to our final destination: Chinese outdoor BBQ (THE BEST!) along with the infamous dice game!!!

The rest is hazy.

I am off to Chengdu in the Sichuan province tomorrow (flying from Guangzhou airport – can’t get enough of that city!) so expect another blog post come Monday!!!

Enjoy the photos

桂山岛 – TURTLE ISLAND

倪么好!

So, despite my “Crocodile Park” blog post saying that I was heading off to Macao this past weekend, I ended up going to 桂山岛 – Guishan Island, or “Turtle Island” with some friends. The island is home to (I am guessing here…) 500 or so people. It definitely has a small island/fishing village vibe to it. The beach was OK – it was no Sanya but it was definitely better than what’s here in Zhuhai! The beach on Saturday was bumping but Sunday we were the only ones there! A thunderstorm was rolling in late afternoon on Saturday but luckily the local police gave us a ride back to our hotel from the beach right before the storm hit! Now that’s rendering service to the public!! ☺
Saturday night was filled with delicious, fresh seafood – the best shrimp that I’ve ever had the pleasure to sink my teeth into along with some mildly inebriated karaoke. Although a Japanese import, Chinese girls have an insatiable hunger for karaoke that leaves you drunk and with ringing ears come last call.
Sunday we woke up, had breakfast, bought some random foodstuffs at the local general store and headed over to the beach. I lost my goggles. ‘Twas beyond heartbreaking.
At about 16.30 we had to depart from the illustrious Turtle Island and head back to Zhuhai.
Looking for cheap flights to go somewhere next weekend so expect something good come next Monday!
我爱你们!

Go-karting à la Chinoise

Salut mes tendres chouchous,

Wednesday evening a group of us interns as well as Jamie, Jamie’s FIANCÉE Helen along with Jamie’s brother and his girlfriend got together for some real Guangdong gastronomy in Gongbei, the area of Zhuhai that borders the mythical SAR of Macau.
After some good food and 啤酒 (beer – TSINGDAO) we made the short trek over to the UNDERGROUND GO KART PARADISE. During our pilgrimage over the go kart paradise, I was fortunate enough to have been offered the chance to partake in the economy of the world’s oldest profession. Needless to say, I declined as the underground paradise of go karts was awaiting me!
The entrance to the go karting place was definitely sketchy; we had to walk down this hot, grimy corridor with some random businesses until we got into the go kart area. The waiting area/lounge was veritably kitschy in the best way possible. The plush sofas with some padding missing in prints ranging from a luxurious purple to a lavish cheetah print definitely set the mood. The plastic vines and leaves overhead reminded me of the time that I lived in the Amazon with the Pirahã people….NOSTALGIA.
The go kart course was amazing. It was a converted underground car park with these little go karts RIPPING through the course. Before getting onto the course and watching others drive, we all said that we probably wouldn’t be going THAT fast. After the first lap, however, we found ourselves in an ecstasy of speed-driven adrenaline pumping through our blood streams. After the first round, we were all smiles and giggling, recounting our crashes and victory moments, i.e. when we overtook Jamie ;)
A good time was had by all.

Bisous

CROCO PARK

Ello ello everyone,

I went to a certain “Crocodile park” with my host family on Saturday. It was definitely interesting, although the novelty admittedly wore off after about an hour. There were monkeys, pigs and crocodiles. Quite the combination.

Afterwards, they took me to the periphery of Zhuhai and we visited a traditional Guangdong village along with a war memorial commemorating the British defeat at Zhuhai. Mind you, the Brits did end up with the Pearl of the Orient, i.e. Hong Kong.

Overall it was a very nice Saturday. The mountain was so peaceful and had wonderful fresh air. It is actually a nature reserve so any development is not allowed in the area. It was a nice departure from the hustle and bustle of the city! And peculiarly enough, on top of this mountain, I had Hong Kong cell phone service…rather strange!

Enjoy the photos!

Can’t wait to fill you all in on my MACAO adventures next weekend! :)

bisous

SINGAPORE

Hello hello my lovelies!

I’ve just come back from a crazy weekend in Singapore. I was originally planning to go to Xiamen but a typhoon hit China this weekend and a cheap flight came up for Singapore so I figured…why not?!

I met up with some friends from uni who live in Singapore and had an amazing time.

Initially when I was deciding between Qingdao and Zhuhai, I never even considered how WONDERFUL it is to be so close to Hong Kong. HK is a hub for all of Asia so the number of cheap flights available is astounding! I am already planning to go to Thailand in July with some friends!

I’ve attached some goofy photos from this weekend, including my experience of having a very large python named Elizabeth wrap around my body at the zoo!

For anyone considering staying in Zhuhai, make sure you fully realise all of the travel opportunities the city affords you!! I don’t think there is a better place, location wise: it borders Macao and along with multiple 1-hour ferry services to Hong Kong daily (to both downtown and directly to the airport) it is just the best!

Enjoy the photos!

Taekwondo / 태권도/ 跆拳道

你好!

So last night an admittedly small group (everyone who skipped out on this one: we definitely had a better time than you did last night!) of Zhuhai interns did a taekwondo class. For those of you who are unfamiliar with TKD, it is a martial art from Korea and is the national sport (and obsession) in South Korea. While it does seem a bit strange to have taken a class here in Zhuhai, my host family informs me that TKD is extremely popular in China, especially here in Zhuhai, with multiple academies established here.

The class was intense; we were all sweating like pigs within the first 15 minutes of warm-ups in the SE China heat. We had one teacher who was originally from Guangzhou, about 1.5-2 hours north of Zhuhai, and his student – both of them were impressive in their physical capabilities as well as their patience with dealing with a group of 外国人 (foreigners) whose Chinese is far from fluency.

Hopefully we’ll get a chance to do it a few more times before summer’s end!

CHINESE CLASS

你好!

I’ve started taking Mandarin classes every morning and have really enjoyed it. The first few days were difficult, especially getting used to the tones!! I have, however, seen alot of improvement and want to continue working on my Mandarin.

My teacher is a bubbly, eccentric 22 year-old girl named Liudi…she’s quite the teacher!

Yesterday myself and my two other classmates who’re also interns went out to lunch with all of the teachers and had a blast! See the attached photo

Cheers

Arrival in Zhuhai

Zhuhai - Gongbei districtHello everyone! / 你好!

I am Michæl and I am one of the new interns at the InternChina office in Zhuhai.  I just arrived here 2 nights ago.  I am originally from Boston but currently live in Montréal for university.  Door-to-door the voyage took me 26 hours – not too bad considering that I have essentially traversed the planet!

My host family is great and I have high hopes for what this experience can bring. While having a great degree of familiarity with many Indo-European languages, I am finding it of little utility here in China!  I am slowly learning some Mandarin and hope to have functional fluency by the time I leave.

Zhuhai is a beautiful city located along the coast, bordering Macao SAR and  just a 50 minute ferry ride from Hong Kong SAR, it is definitely a good place to be!

I’ve attached a photo I found on Flickr of the Gongbei district in Zhuhai.

Cheers

Laser tag session!!

Laser tag Session!!

One of the activities really pleasant in Qingdao you can try is this one. Dressed like a soldier, with captors on all your body, guns (you have the choice between sniper rifles, machine guns and Short range guns) and play in a park.

We went there, 20 people from internchina, 10 from Yechao staff (the best club in Qingdao) and 50 strangers! Saturday, April the 16th, at 8 o’clock AM! (to wake up at 6.30 AM wasn’t a pleasure…) We were mixed in 2 teams: the Chinese army against the Korean army (Korea won 2 battles on 3). The battlefield was the TV Tower’s Park, Robert, Marvin (Chinese army, our monster kills) and Nick (Korean army) were the snipers, Keno (the best gunner I have seen!!) and me where the machine guns for Chinese army and Tommy (the Yechao DJ!!) was the more dangerous machinegun of the Korean Army. You could hear his devil laugh after He had touched you…!!

Dennis, Marian, Tobias were brave soldiers, always going ahead. They used very good strategy. Hanane were the only one who always gets killed by her own teammate (maybe they thought that she was more useful dead than alive…), Stephanie liked to stay always at the top and shoot on poor first line people… So bad girl. Jessica, Marina and Liane were specialized in hiding behind trees and not moving until the end of the game. I think that the snipers should cover up themselves.

Girls has to cover snipers, boys were snipers or first line attack. We had 10 lives for each person. 1 hour of lesson, and 3 hours of play. Really exhausting but so funny! The last round was 2 lines, fighting against each other.

Dominic was the kamikaze, always where he should not… Tim was the “I shoot on you but you can’t see me haha !!” guy, all play long I haven’t seen him. He was surely cooperating with the snipers (always hiding too). And Alex was our translator with Emily, without them, impossible to understand the monitor instructions.

Whatever, with each play during at least 45 minutes, and 30 RMB (around 3€50) for 4 hours of fun, we went home tired, and happy!!

Beach BBQ

Hey guys,

last Saturday the Internchina people came together for Gong Fu 功夫 lessons and BBQ on the beach. Actually, it was the first day of what we may call „summer“. Over 20°, and the danger to get a little sunburn. For months we have waited for this day!

Teacher Pan gave us, together with Dan, one of his experienced long-term students, an insight in the Chinese material arts. Pan Laoshi has been practicing for more than 40 years and therefore is an expert for the real, traditional Gong Fu.
It was a great pleasure to learn a few moves from him. Check out the video, where Pan Laoshi and Dan are showing Gong Fu in Baguazhang style!
Bagua

The dinner after our “hard work” was delicious, thanks to long preparations in Jenny’s new apartment and Fay’s and Nick’s professional skills on the BBQ ☺

Trip to Zhongshan

Hey everybody,

my name is Isabel and I’m the new intern in Zhuhai. Surrounded by some very nice polite guys (I’m the only girl in the office…:-)) , I preferred to have a real tough trip to Zhongshan the last weekend, to get a change from daily office life. No, I’m joking…;-) Because I’m leaving Zhuhai under 2 weeks, I just wanted to collect some more impressions of China. You are probably asking yourselves, where  Zhongshan is located and why go to that city. Zhongshan is only 70 minutes far from Zhuhai and I’ve heard a lot about this beautiful city before. (On the detail of the map you can have a look)

As it happens, I met accidentally Jamie and his girlfriend Helen at the bus station in Gongbei. They just stood behind me in the line for buying the bus tickets and because of killing two birds with one stone, we decided to go together to Zhongshan. When we arrived, we were all a little bit disorientated and not really sure what the ‘must see’ sights were. But fortunately Helen had a map of Zhongshan and so we started to walk around with the aim to get to a nice park. After we walked through a pretty pedestrian street with some old houses (ore maybe they just have an antique look and are not really old) we started to get lost. We finally arrived to the park but in the end we discovered that this park wasn’t the right one. We were a little bit confused but after a while, we found the park in which we actually wanted to go.

On the top of the park is a tower and if you want to reach it, you can easily get the impression you have to climb a mountain. :-) Because of the immense effort we had a lot of appetite and we decided to find a good restaurant where we can also have beer. We didn’t know that this would be our next challenge. (If you ever have in mind to go to Zhongshan and to have a good meal there, ask Jamie before) After we meandered, we found in the end a real good restaurant and we had a lot of delicious dishes.

I can absolutely recommend Zhongshan for a one day trip and if you go there have fun! :-)

Interns on fire

Hey guys,
we’ve been on fire last weekend in a traditional massage center in Qingdao…  They even showed us some more scarry stuff in movies what they are able to do (releasing blood from different parts of the body etc.) but as we were already scared enough to be on fire for half an hour, we decided only to go that far for this time. Made a lot of pics, however everyone looks kind of the same under the towels… guess who is who?!?
Cheers, Frank

Cooking class in Zhuhai

Hey folks, this is Alex. I recently started my internship at the Intern China Business Exchange subsidiary in Zhuhai and it is really great so far. The entire team is very cool and they had just organised a cultural activity – a cooking class. Well, it was at least supposed to be one but it turned out to be an evening with lots of Qingdao beer and karaoke! To start from the beginning, when we arrived at the restaurant it was so packed that the chef didn´t really have the time to show us how to prepare local dishes; and instead the owner arranged a truly opulent dinner for us. The food was absolutely scrumptious and this event was a perfect opportunity to meet and exchange with the other interns here in Zhuhai. However, after that many dishes and bottles of beer it had become so late that the kitchen staff was already finishing work and powering on the KARAOKE machine. The good thing was that I was able to avoid singing and thus “enjoy” completely the performances of the restaurant employees. Nevertheless, we still got the chance to go in the kitchen and watch the chef preparing a fast dish. I really hope there will be more “cooking classes” while I´m here. ;)

Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong

Hey, this is Jamie. I am now running our office in sunny southern China. Zhuhai is a pretty cool city and one of the best things is that Macau and Hong Kong are so close. On friday we walked across the border into Macau after work and booked into a hotel, which was pretty cheap, had a pool and was close to the big Venecian Casino resort. The casino is insane! Really huge and packed all day long. The best things in Macau are the portugese style restaurants and colonial ruins. You can get great food and the streets look very typically Chinese like you see in movies, but with some random portugese architecture mixed in.

Hong Kong is really awesome. I’m sure you all heard about it so I’ll just leave you with some pictures of what we saw there and in Macau.
